Are you ready to join the beauty industry and get started toward a life you’ve always dreamed of having? We can’t wait to show you more about how life in cosmetology can help you achieve your goals! Here’s what you need to know to become a cosmetologist in Ohio.

Becoming a cosmetologist can be broken down into just a few steps:

  1. Apply for and attend an accredited cosmetology school in Ohio
  2. Complete your required training hours
  3. Sit for the Ohio State Boards
  4. Complete continuing education to maintain your license

Each of these things has their own journey you have to complete, but we’ll be here to help you every step of the way! Talk to our admissions team today to see how you can get started.

1. Apply for an Accredited Cosmetology School

When you’re looking for a cosmetology school that fits with your goals as well as your values, it’s important to look for schools that are nationally accredited. The National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts And Sciences (NACCAS) is a great resource for those who are looking for valuable and trustworthy schools.

You’ll also have to apply and be accepted into the school of your choice. Each process might look different for each school. At Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg, we try to make the process straightforward and easy to navigate with assistance just a phone call away! Here are some of the things you’ll need to apply to your program:

  • Enrollment application
  • High school diploma or GED
  • High school or college transcripts
  • Copy of a driver’s license, passport, or social security card
  • Signed enrollment agreement
  • Registration fee

2. Complete Your Required Training Hours

While in school, you’ll be required to complete a certain number of hours to sit for your state boards. Our Advanced Cosmetology Program is 1800 hours and can take as little as 53 weeks to complete. While you’re in school, you can learn more about the world of hair, skin, and nails!

Here are some of the things you can learn if you attend Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg:

  • Hairstyling
  • Haircutting
  • Texturizing
  • Coloring
  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Artificial nail enhancements
  • Facials
  • Hair removal
  • Makeup
  • Salon operation and management
  • And more!

Completing your required hours will help ensure that you’ve prepared for the state boards!

3. Sit for the Ohio State Boards

To be able to become licensed in the state of Ohio, you’ll need to put your knowledge to the test! After you’ve completed your schooling, you’ll need to sit for an exam that can help show that you know the materials. In 2018, Summit Salon Academy had a 100% student licensure rate of those that sat for the exam.

You can learn more about what types of questions will be asked on the Ohio State Cosmetology and Barber Board website.

4. Complete Continuing Education To Maintain Your License

If you pass your state boards then you’re ready to find a place to start working! We hope that you love your new journey and passion in the cosmetology industry, no matter where that path takes you.

To make sure that you stay knowledgeable and up-to-date with current industry trends and information, you will be required to complete continuing education hours to maintain your license in the state of Ohio.

See a Future as a Nail Technician!

You can learn about the different types of nails, massaging techniques, and learn how to properly care for nails in our Advanced Nails program. Book an appointment or contact an advisor to learn how you can start a future in beauty!

Don’t put your dreams on hold because you are worried about money! There are so many financial aid options available to those who qualify, there’s no reason not to go to school. We can walk you through what those options are, how to apply for financial aid, and what scholarships we offer at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg.

1. Federal Loans and Grants

Anyone can apply for financial aid! This Summit Salon Academy is approved by the Department of Education to offer financial aid to those who qualify. By filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), you can determine if you qualify for grants or loans from the school.

Loan and grants can help you out with tuition, living expenses, and books.

You can often get low interest rates if you qualify for a loan while in beauty school. It’s a good idea to look for a loan that you can start paying in small monthly payments or one that starts payments after you finish beauty school.

You might qualify for a Pell Grant. A grant is typically an award given to you. Unlike a loan, this is something that you will not be required to pay back. The most common grant is a Pell Grant, which can be determined by your financial aid status. To see if you qualify for a Pell Grant, you must first fill out the FAFSA®.

FAFSA® can be quick and easy to apply for as long as you have all of your financial information near you. If you’re fresh out of high school getting ready to go to beauty school, you’ll often need your parents or guardian to fill out a portion of the FAFSA®.

You can watch these guided videos released by the Federal Student Aid department for help setting up an account and applying. You can use our school code when asked your preferred school: 041668. If you need further assistance you can contact an admissions counselor.

2. Scholarships

Summit Salon Academy is partnered with the American Association of Cosmetology and Beauty Changes Lives, which offer over 100 scholarship opportunities. Scholarships are typically awarded to students who have high academic achievement or who align with their values.

While starting the application process for these awards might take some work, such as submitting a written essay or a long application form, it’s worth it! Scholarships are similar to grants meaning that you are given money that you won’t have to pay back. Check out our scholarships page to learn about common scholarship opportunities that could be available to you!

3. Private Loans

If you would rather take out a loan at your personal bank, sometimes that can be a good option. Personal banks or other local credit unions can often offer you a low interest rate depending on your credit score and income.

4. Work Full Time and Do School Part Time

You can have the option to work full time and do school part time! If you are good at balancing your time, you can work full time while going to beauty school.

Our Advanced Esthetics Program and Advanced Nail Programs offer half-time schedules. We also offer evening schedules for those who are working during the day. Schedules are predetermined, so you’ll have to check out the schedule for your program to see if it will fit with your full time career.

5. Payment Plans

Payment plans are an option, and they can make it so that you don’t have to pay everything at once. Our payment plans are interest free, which means it would be cheaper than taking out a loan. If you are working and saving your money, you might benefit from setting up a payment plan with us.

When Can I Start?

Now you know that money won’t hold you back, it’s time to start looking into programs! All of our programs accept a variety of forms of financial aid, which means you can choose what you love! Whether you have a passion for cosmetology, or prefer the intricate details of nail art, you can do what interests you most at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg.

Book a tour and an academic advisor and they can walk you through financial aid, our beauty programs, and show you around the school.

If you are going to beauty school, you might want to know what some of the cosmetology school must-haves are! Here at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg, we have an advanced cosmetology program that covers esthetics, hair, and nails. We’ve handpicked the items we believe are the most important for an aspiring beauty professional, plus we’ve added in some other relevant items too.

1. A Cosmetology Kit

The first item that’s a must have is a cosmetology kit! Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg provides Sam Villa professional tools available for students to purchase. These are salon-grade tools, because we want you to have tools that will enhance your learning experience. Here’s some tools that might be included in the kit:

  • A variety of shears
  • Hair brush set
  • Blow dryer
  • Flat iron
  • Hair clips
  • Comb
  • Apron
  • Mannequin heads
  • Manicure and pedicure set
  • Makeup kit
  • Electric clippers
  • Comb Set

Each kit varies per school, so it’s important to find a school that offers everything you need. Check out our class catalog to see everything that’s included in ours. Let’s dive into other cosmetology school must-haves!

2. Hair Accessories

Keeping a hair clip or hair tie on you is essential! You never know when you might need to pull your hair back. Cosmetologists often work with bleach or hair coloring products, and you won’t want to get products in your own hair. If you have short hair or bangs, barrettes or clips can be a fun way to pull your hair back with style. Scrunchies can be fashionable for longer hair, or a simple hair tie will do.

3. Organization Tools

The best cosmetologists are the ones who stay organized! Having a planner is always a good idea to write down class times, important project dates, events, and anything else that you need to fit into your schedule. Time is important to both you and your clients.

A great cosmetologist sets an appointment time for each client and makes sure that they have the products they need ahead of time. It may be a good idea to get in the habit of scheduling everything while you’re in school to prepare for your future.

A notebook and a pen is also good to bring to class to take notes and write down anything necessary. You never know when you are going to refer back to your notes for an exam.

4. A Water Bottle That Will Last!

Reusable water bottles are trending! The cool part is that there are water bottles made with materials that can keep your ice from melting! You can purchase a water bottle at a local store or online!

You can choose water bottles that have a design or ones that are one solid color that you can decorate with stickers! Putting your school sticker on them or adding stickers from places you’ve traveled to can be cool. We want our students to stay hydrated so that they can have the best experience with our cosmetology program.

5. A Bag To Carry Everything in

With all of the tools and items you are taking to school you will want something to carry it all in! A backpack or a simple handbag will do. In fact, our kit includes a book bag, too! Here’s some other items you can keep in this bag:

  • Deodorant
  • Chapstick
  • Snacks
  • Hair accessories
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Nail filer
  • Other hygiene products

It’s good to come prepared with these items in case you break a nail, need to freshen up a bit, or if you get hungry. Keep these items in your bag so you can maintain your overall health and wellness!

6. Back-to-School Clothes

Everyone loves back-to-school clothes! Some beauty schools require a dress code. Here at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg, we request that you wear all black. You can present yourself as a professional while you’re still in school and can finish the look with a black apron and custom name tag.

Aprons are part of the cosmetology uniform because they can help protect clothing from getting bleach and other hair products on them. Those are included as part of the kit, too!

7. Comfy Shoes Are a Must-Have!

It’s important to wear shoes that you feel comfortable in. While you may have more flexibility on the color of your shoes, black shoes will go with your outfit and look professional. Cosmetologists often stand while they do their clients’ hair and makeup. There will be a good amount of standing and sitting, so make sure that your shoes provide good support.

Are you ready to go back to school? There are a few things to do before your first week of beauty school. Getting a good night of sleep, packing a bag, and picking up your textbooks are just a few! See how prepared you are with Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg back to school checklist!

Do Some Research

Do your research to prepare yourself both mentally and physically! Make sure that you have looked up the location of the school ahead of time and know how to get there. You may have to research local bus routes or find transportation before the first day of school.

Mentally prepare yourself for what the program will be like, and what you can expect to learn. If there are any books or kits you need to pick up, you might want to do so before the first day of class. Check out our blog about some other cosmetology school must-haves.

Pack Your Bag

Make sure you have all of the items and supplies necessary! It’s a good idea to pack snacks, hygiene products, and a notebook. Pick out a bag that will be comfortable to wear and easy to carry around. Packing your bag the night before is a great way to not forget something important.

Lay Out Your Outfit

Try on your outfit and have it ready the night before so that you don’t have to decide in the morning. This can save time getting ready and ensure that you have everything. It could be a hassle if you woke up the first day of school and realized that you needed a belt or different shoes. Look up your school’s dress code to see what you can wear!

Eat Healthy

Eating nutritious foods can boost your immune system and your overall happiness! If you haven’t been eating the foods your body needs to be focused and attentive, you might want to start now. Here’s a good start to a well balanced diet:

  • Fresh fruits
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Lean proteins

Everyone’s diet is different, so make sure you adjust this list to fit your diet. Drink plenty of water, and start eating healthy now so you can feel your best for the first week of school!

Get a Good Night of Sleep

Lastly, get as much rest as you can before you start school. Resting can help you feel rejuvenated and ready to move! To avoid being tired, a good night of sleep will do. It may be difficult getting sleep when your mind is racing the night before your first day. A good sleeping tip is to lay in bed thirty minutes earlier than your bedtime to wind down from the day. During that time, disconnect from electronics. Don’t forget to set your alarm!

Can You See a Future in Beauty?

If you can see yourself in the beauty industry, you should check out our programs in nails, esthetics, and cosmetology! Each program can bring out your creativity and allow you to learn about beauty industry trends. Book a tour at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg if you are passionate about your future!

While our lives have been impacted by COVID-19, it’s no wonder that beauty trends have adapted, too! As we are asked to wear masks, do proper social distancing, and in some cases work from home, that means our beauty routines can change as well.

As we’re still working to get to that new normal, we are excited to see that the beauty industry hasn’t gone away. Instead, it has adapted and changed along with the rest of the world.

Here are five of the most common beauty trends we’ve seen recently!

1. Building a New Skincare Routine

The most notable change that we’ve seen is a rise in people looking for good skincare routines! As more people find themselves at home, they are taking the time to give themselves the self-care they deserve. A good skincare routine can provide:

  • Needed relaxation
  • Healthy skin
  • Improved mental health
  • And more!

In fact, some say that developing a good skincare routine can save you money, as you’re less likely to spend money experimenting with other products. What’s in your current routine?

2. Do-It-Yourself Products

As salons and spas have been closed, there has also been an increase of do-it-yourself products, too. This may include DIY hair colors, nail care, and more! Rather than following this trend at least for your hair, we recommend coming into a salon or spa* the first time. Our students can help you decide what look is right for you, plus we can recommend ways you can maintain your style.

This is the same for any skincare services from our student estheticians, as they can recommend the right products for you to take home and use yourself!

While waiting for your next appointment, you can also check out these 8 beauty looks that you can try at home!

3. Natural Products

Natural beauty products are also in and have been trending for a while. Whether you have a favorite recipe for a facial or hair mask, it’s always nice to have products where you know exactly what’s in them.

As everyone stayed inside, we were able to lessen pollution. This is also a good time to consider more natural products that can keep going with this trend. More natural products also provide an opportunity to go green with reusable/natural packaging. It can also mean recipes you can make with everyday ingredients, like honey or coconut oil. Just like with every trend, always do your research to see what may work best for you.

4. Playing Up the Eyes

While a mask makes it harder to rock a bright red lipstick, it does mean you can emphasize other parts of your face, like your eyes! Have you wanted to try a classic smokey eye? What about a thick winged eyeliner? Now is the perfect time to accentuate your gorgeous eyes!

A good example of a look you can do is this bridal look by our student @beautyybyybailey. The beautiful shimmer eyeshadow and soft curls really work!

5. New Hairstyles With Less Maintenance

We’ve seen more and more people looking for something they can maintain at home. With a lot of salons that had to momentarily close their doors, a lot of people couldn’t go to their usual stylist. As people are able to make their appointment, they’re looking for something they can either maintain or replicate at home until their next visit.

After all, you deserve to look fabulous, whether you’re going out or staying in! If you can’t decide what look you should try next, a good balayage may be right for you! This dimensional color style is a great way to keep color in without worrying about what it will look like as it grows. You can see this look from our student @overmydeadbeauty for some inspiration.

Have you ever wondered what cosmetology is? Cosmetology is the art of beautifying hair, skin, and nails. It’s an awesome career path that many choose to go down to follow their passion for beauty.

If this sounds like the right path for you but you aren’t sure where to start, we’ve got you covered! Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg is the perfect place to answer your questions! We’re here to help you learn more about the world of cosmetology and what it can offer you!

What Is Cosmetology?

Cosmetology is a great career for many people. Most cosmetologists focus on hair, skin, and nails in their profession. If you’re training in the state of Ohio, then you’re required to train 1800 hours before you can sit for the state board. This makes it a very well rounded and exciting industry to be a part of.

But, before you can become a cosmetologist, you need to be trained and licensed to perform these types of services on guests. A cosmetology program at a good beauty school is often a good start to learn the required material and be prepared to sit for the state exam.

At Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg we can help people pursue their passions in cosmetology with our Advanced Cosmetology program! Check out everything you can learn in the beauty world with cosmetology!

Hair

There’s so much to learn about hair care! Have you ever sat in a salon chair and wondered how your hairstylist worked their magic? You can learn everything about keeping hair healthy and how to create the perfect hairstyle for your clients. There’s more that goes into caring for your guests’ hair, though. It’s a science and an art! Here are some things that we teach our students at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg.

  • Bacteriology
  • Shampoos, rinses, and treatments
  • Chemistry
  • Styling
  • Haircutting
  • Chemical texturizers and relaxers
  • Hair coloring

Another great thing out our school is that we are a Redken Premier school, which means that our students get the opportunity to work with high-quality products on their guests.

Skin

Skincare is also an interesting field to know more about when working as a cosmetologist. As a cosmetologist, you have the opportunity to not only work with hair, but also helping people improve their skin. Here’s what we teach at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg:

  • Skin theory
  • Diseases, disorders, and conditions
  • Facials
  • Facial makeup
  • Hair removal
  • Relaxation treatments

Nails

If you love both haircare and skincare, there’s another exciting industry you can learn more about with a cosmetology program: nail care! Here’s what you can learn more about:

  • Nail structures
  • Manicures and pedicures
  • Tools and equipment used by nail techs
  • Hand, arm, foot, and leg massages
  • Artificial nails and maintenance

If you want to discover more about what you can learn during cosmetology school then check out our blog What Can You Learn In Cosmetology School In Ohio?

Why It’s Easy To Love Cosmetology

There’s so much to love about cosmetology, but there are even more things to love about the industry than just doing hair, skin, and nails. Here are some awesome perks to becoming a cosmetologist!

  • You can help other people promote their self-care and self-love.
  • It’s a great alternative to a traditional college experience.
  • You can help others feel confident and beautiful.
  • You can work in a variety of places and a variety of different jobs.

At Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg, we want to keep our students and guests safe and will continue to provide updates on Instagram and Facebook for when we are able to open our doors to both guests and students.

In the meantime, we wanted to focus on a field that’s important to us: cosmetology. We know the times are uncertain of when you can go to your favorite hairstylist to get the perfect look. But, we want to support those who are thinking about pursuing a future in the beauty industry, as you don’t have to put your dreams on hold.

Our students are hard at work learning online, as there is a lot a future cosmetologist can learn! In fact, cosmetologists are like hairstylists, estheticians, and nail technicians wrapped into one. As part of our advanced cosmetology program, you can expect to learn:

  • Hairstyling
  • Thermal styling
  • Haircutting
  • Perms
  • Hair relaxing
  • Hair coloring
  • Manicures
  • Pedicures
  • Hand and foot massages
  • Facials
  • Makeup
  • And more!

Along with the beauty side of cosmetology, you can expect to learn the business side, too. This includes learning how to run a salon and providing good customer service to each of your guests. The state of Ohio requires future cosmetologists to complete at least 1,500 hours of learning.

There’s a lot to take in, so make sure you find a program that helps you learn what you need to be successful! Here’s a deeper dive into what you can expect to learn in some of our cosmetology courses:

How To Deep Clean

Before a licensed cosmetologist can start providing guests with beauty services, an important first step is proper sanitation techniques. Cosmetologists learn how to sanitize their equipment and keep things as clean as possible between guests.

This is especially important right now, as all licensed beauty professionals have to do everything they can to keep their guests safe when they are open once more.

All Things Hair

Taking care of your hair is more than just brushing and styling. Good cosmetologists can learn how products react with hair and how to best style and color to prevent damage and breakage wherever possible.

Whether you’re looking to provide fun looks to local clients in an Ohio salon or create glamorous hairstyles at fashion shows, you can get a good foundation during your cosmetology education at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg!

Skincare? Yes, Please!

We cover many of the principles and techniques from our advanced esthetics program in our cosmetology program itself. The focus of our program is on facials and makeup. Just like hair, this also includes understanding the client’s facial structure and skin type to create a gorgeous look that matches their skin tone and face shape.

It also covers understanding what types of products work best based on each guests’ skin type. For example, guests with oily skin may need different products than one whose skin is primarily dry. And, after the appointment cosmetologists can recommend products for their guests to care for their skin at home.

Nail Art

There’s more to cosmetology than just learning how to paint nails. What often is covered in part of an education in nails are:

  • Common nail shapes
  • Artificial nails application, maintenance, and removal
  • Hand/arm and foot/leg massages

After all, a good nail appointment is more than just the final product. It’s the experience, too! As part of your education, you can learn how to provide services to help your guests feel relaxed while in your chair.

Being a Business Professional

Licensed cosmetologists have to be business professionals. While getting an education in cosmetology, you can feel confident with the knowledge on how to start and run your own business. You can learn how to build a professional portfolio and get clients.

A big focus of the cosmetology program at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg is to help students learn how to provide amazing customer service. This includes principles like:

  • How to present yourself as a business professional
  • How to listen to guests during their appointment
  • How to recommend the right products after an appointment
