What Can You Learn in Cosmetology School in Ohio?

Student providing services under supervision of licensed professional.

While we wish we could open our doors once more to our guests right away, we are still waiting on the state of Ohio to determine when we can safely operate. At Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg, we want to keep our students and guests safe and will continue to provide updates on Instagram and Facebook for when we are able to open our doors to both guests and students.

In the meantime, we wanted to focus on a field that’s important to us: cosmetology. We know the times are uncertain of when you can go to your favorite hairstylist to get the perfect look. But, we want to support those who are thinking about pursuing a future in the beauty industry, as you don’t have to put your dreams on hold.

Our students are hard at work learning online, as there is a lot a future cosmetologist can learn! In fact, cosmetologists are like hairstylists, estheticians, and nail technicians wrapped into one. As part of our advanced cosmetology program, you can expect to learn:

  • Hairstyling
  • Thermal styling
  • Haircutting
  • Perms
  • Hair relaxing
  • Hair coloring
  • Manicures
  • Pedicures
  • Hand and foot massages
  • Facials
  • Makeup
  • And more!

Along with the beauty side of cosmetology, you can expect to learn the business side, too. This includes learning how to run a salon and providing good customer service to each of your guests. The state of Ohio requires future cosmetologists to complete at least 1,500 hours of learning.

There’s a lot to take in, so make sure you find a program that helps you learn what you need to be successful! Here’s a deeper dive into what you can expect to learn in some of our cosmetology courses:

How To Deep Clean

Before a licensed cosmetologist can start providing guests with beauty services, an important first step is proper sanitation techniques. Cosmetologists learn how to sanitize their equipment and keep things as clean as possible between guests.

This is especially important right now, as all licensed beauty professionals have to do everything they can to keep their guests safe when they are open once more.

All Things Hair

Taking care of your hair is more than just brushing and styling. Good cosmetologists can learn how products react with hair and how to best style and color to prevent damage and breakage wherever possible.

Whether you’re looking to provide fun looks to local clients in an Ohio salon or create glamorous hairstyles at fashion shows, you can get a good foundation during your cosmetology education at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg!

Skincare? Yes, Please!

We cover many of the principles and techniques from our advanced esthetics program in our cosmetology program itself. The focus of our program is on facials and makeup. Just like hair, this also includes understanding the client’s facial structure and skin type to create a gorgeous look that matches their skin tone and face shape.

It also covers understanding what types of products work best based on each guests’ skin type. For example, guests with oily skin may need different products than one whose skin is primarily dry. And, after the appointment cosmetologists can recommend products for their guests to care for their skin at home.

Nail Art

There’s more to cosmetology than just learning how to paint nails. What often is covered in part of an education in nails are:

  • Common nail shapes
  • Artificial nails application, maintenance, and removal
  • Hand/arm and foot/leg massages

After all, a good nail appointment is more than just the final product. It’s the experience, too! As part of your education, you can learn how to provide services to help your guests feel relaxed while in your chair.

Being a Business Professional

Licensed cosmetologists have to be business professionals. While getting an education in cosmetology, you can feel confident with the knowledge on how to start and run your own business. You can learn how to build a professional portfolio and get clients.

A big focus of the cosmetology program at Summit Salon Academy Perrysburg is to help students learn how to provide amazing customer service. This includes principles like:

  • How to present yourself as a business professional
  • How to listen to guests during their appointment
  • How to recommend the right products after an appointment
